History
The first Denny’s restaurant was opened by Harold Butler in Lakewood California, under the name of Danny’s Donuts. In 1954, Butler opened additional restaurants and expanded the menu to include sandwiches and a few other entrée items. In 1959, with 20 open restaurants, Butler changed the name to Denny’s and doughnuts were phased out of the menu.
Butler often chose locations for his restaurants that were off main highway exits, where there were always plenty of travelers, night and day. This made Denny’s a quick success.
In 1967, the first Denny’s opened outside the United States, in Acapulco, Mexico, and quickly opened other Denny’s restaurants in Mexico. Today, there are Denny’s in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, Curacao, New Zealand, Japan, Jamaica, Honduras, Costa Rica, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.
Denny’s saw major expansion in 2010 when Pilot Flying J started opening Denny’s at Flying J truck stops. Most Denny’s restaurants are open 365 days a year and are almost always in convenient locations for travelers.
