IHOP History
The first IHOP opened in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California. The restaurant served pancakes, crepes and blintzes with a variety of flavored syrups. In 1979, a marketing program introduced the acronym “IHOP” for the first time.
In the 1980’s, IHOP broadened the menu by adding a variety of lunch and dinner items, and had advertising slogans like “Man does not live by pancakes alone”, and “Good things cooking at breakfast, lunch and dinner.” Between 1983 and 1987, IHOP added 26 lunch and dinner items to the menu. In 1993, IHOP added Country Griddle Cakes, a nutritional pancake made with non-fat yogurt, Cream of Wheat and skim milk.
In 2003, IHOP launched the award winning “Come hungry. Leave happy.” advertising campaign and introduced their delicious Stuffed French Toast. In, March 2011, IHOP held their 6th annual National Pancake Day, serving free stacks of buttermilk pancakes.
