Sonic History
In 1953, Troy N. Smith Sr. purchased a walk-up root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma, which served hamburgers, hotdogs and root beer.
In 1954, Smith had an intercom system set up at the root beer stand so customers could order food from their cars, and the food was delivered by carhops. An entrepreneur named Charles Pappe stopped by the drive-in and was impressed with the set-up. He became Smith’s business partner, and in 1956, the first franchise location opened in Woodward Oklahoma.
In 1959, Smith & Pappe renamed the restaurant Sonic, which worked well with their slogan, “Service with the Speed of Sound.”
In 1967, Pappe died of a heart attack, so Smith brought in two Sonic restaurant franchisees, Matt Kinslow and Marvin Jirous, to run the company’s supply and distribution division, and Smith continued to develop the franchise operations.
By 1972, 165 Sonic restaurants were in operation. Too large for the 3 men to run, the company restructured as a franchise company. Over 800 new restaurants opened in the mid 1970’s. The first Sonic TV commercial ran in 1977. Frankie Avalon appeared in Sonic commercials from 1987 to 1993, and business boomed.
In the mid 1990s’ consistent menus were introduced at all Sonic locations, and in 2003 Sonic added a breakfast menu.
