Taco Bell History
In the mid 1940’s, Glen Bell first opened a hot dog stand called “Bell’s Drive In” in California. Six years later, he sold the drive in and opened a new restaurant selling tacos, with the name “Taco-Tia”. Over the next few years, he owned 4 restaurants named “El Taco” in Southern California. In 1962, Bell sold “El Taco” to his partner and opened his first “Taco Bell”. By 1967, the 100th Taco Bell had opened, and in 1978 Glen Bell sold over 800 Taco Bell restaurants to PepsiCo and he became a PepsiCo shareholder.
In the 1980’s, Taco Bell expanded its menu and also marketed its fast food along with blockbuster movies, such as the “Batman” promotion, which proved to be a smart advertising gimmick.
From 1997 to 2001, the Taco Bell chihuahua, Gidget, was the star and spokesdog on radio and television commercials with the catchphrase, “Yo quiero Taco Bell”! Gidget was retired in 2001 at the age of seven, but she lived many happy years after retirement.
In 2001, Taco Bell launched a new slogan – “Think outside the bun”.
